In-world profile

Within the fictional world of State of Containment, the Atropos Institute is an independent research organisation focused on resilience, continuity and the behaviour of complex systems under stress.

Modern societies depend on networks that are increasingly interconnected. Transport, communications, utilities, institutions and communities rarely fail in isolation. Atropos studies how those systems behave when normal assumptions no longer hold.

Our work brings together infrastructure research, human systems, urban resilience, emerging technologies and community memory. The aim is not simply to understand failure, but to examine what allows systems and people to continue functioning when conditions become uncertain.

Atropos supports research programmes, controlled field trials, deployable research platforms and resilience exercises carried out with public and private partners.
